The ideal temperature of nutrient solution is somewhere between 18°C and 20°C (65°F - 68°F). Nutrient temperatures that drop too low will stress out your plants, slowing growth down to a crawl. During the colder winter months, a tank heater will prevent these drops and keep things running sweetly. When nutrient temperatures creep above the danger-zone of 21°C, levels of dissolved oxygen start to drop and the door is opened up to various root diseases, including Pythium. If you're having difficulty controlling high nutrient temperatures, a water chiller will do the work for you. It will keep roots healthy and happy, with plenty of dissolved oxygen.

Whether you hand-water your indoor garden or run a hydroponic grow system, it is very important to keep your nutrient solution within the optimal temperature range of 18° to 20°C. Water's capacity to hold onto dissolved oxygen diminishes when water-temperatures creep above 21°C. Plant roots thrive with easy access to oxygen, but if levels start to drop it will cause big problems, causing growth to stall…That's why it's so important to keep your nutrient solution in the sweet spot. Warm, oxygen depleted air is also an ideal breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria, opening the door up to infections and serious cases of root rot. Pythium is always more prevalent during the summer months, when customers have greater difficulties controlling nutrient temperatures.

Conversely, during the winter-time, nutrient solution that is too cold will shock plants and lead to stunted plant growth. In this situation, a suitable water heater will be required to maintain vigorous growth rates.
